ABSTRACT
The main objective of this study it to examine the effect of hunger on learning capability of primary school pupils using Oredo Local government Area in Edo state as case study. The research design adopted for this study is the survey method in data collection. It is used to obtain the peoples opinion through the questionnaire. A total number of five (schools) was purposively selected and a sample size of 150 pupils (30 from each primary school) was drawn out from the selected schools in Oredo Local Government Area. The sampling technique adopted for this research is purposive sampling technique. Data was analyzed using simple percentage in frequencies and tables. Hypothesis test was conducted using Chi-Square Statistical package for social science (SPSS).
Findings of the study reveals that Pupils who are hungry do not concentrate in class. Lack of concentration in class due to hunger affects pupils academic performances.Hunger can affect the mental development of primary school pupils. Further findings from the hypothesis concludes that Malnutrition of a primary school pupil can distort their learning capability. More so, Hunger has significant effect on the academic performance of primary school pupil. The study therefore recommends that he government, stakeholders, NGOs, communities and private individuals should join hands in order to curb down the problem of hunger which leads to poor academic performances of pupils. More so, NGO’s should sensitive parent, Parents should be aware that a well-developed person is the one well fed at the tender age. They should invest in improving the nutritious status of the young ones so that when they grow up, their lives are better.
